Excerpts:
Chapter 15: The Power of Little Things

I have made it a habit to notice and become excited about the little things that happen to me on a daily basis. For example, one evening before giving a keynote presentation in Chicago, I arrived early for dinner at the hotel restaurant. The waiter politely told me that I was the restaurant's first customer that evening and that they weren't open for business yet, so would I mind waiting in the lounge for about 20 minutes?

"The first customer?" I said to him. "Wow! Does this mean I get a prize?" I asked with a big smile on my face.

"Well, I'll see what I can do," snickered the waiter as he led me to a white covered table in the hotel lounge. To my surprise, he returned a few minutes later bearing a dessert cart that he wheeled smartly up in front of my table. He stood back, whipped off the cover from a large silver platter on the cart and then made a wide bow as he presented me the biggest, the fattest, chocolate-covered strawberry I had ever seen. It looked like it had just been picked from the farm. It was so fresh looking with its perky green cap of leaves-the shiny redness under it showing it had ripened to perfection. The sheen of the chocolate surrounding it completed this most wonderful strawberry-and it was just for me!

I felt like a small child at Christmas, and I squealed and clapped my hands with delight!

The waiter said he'd never seen anyone get so excited about a strawberry. After all, it was such a "little thing." "Yes, I guess it is," I replied. "But, you know, that's really what life is all about, isn't it? I mean, celebrating the 'little' things."

Small pleasures will be more abundant in our lives than grandiose ones, so we need to celebrate even the tiniest events and mark their occurrences with our gratitude and delight. For example, right now give yourself a standing ovation for all your achievements, big and small. Yes, you may develop a few laugh lines, but they will be worth the effort!"

Get excited about the little things to gain a new appreciation for life!

"RuthKay is like a modern day Erma Bombeck reflecting on the everyday occurrences in our lives with humor and wise counsel."
